“Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can't remember who we are or why we're here.”

Join me as we create a patchwork of birth stories & try to get to the heart of what it means to exist in this messy, beautiful, broken world.

birth stories are magic 🪄

Welcome to Latent Phase

I'm so glad you're here.

L✹P is a writing project from midwife, mother & writer, Emily Flannery.

I'm a midwife with over a decade of experience, and in that time I've been a witness to so much of the joy and grief that coalesces inside the birthing room. Now I want to bring it to the page, and I'm hoping your stories will be right at the centre.

Your stories will open the door to the sprawling universe of pregnancy, birth and postpartum (and all of the in-between) so we can start to untangle the knots of a broken maternity system, make sense of our experiences and, ultimately, feel less alone. We can revel in the magic of bringing new life into the world, and find solace when our best laid plans end up falling by the wayside.

I hope you'll join me as we create a patchwork of birth stories & try to get to the heart of what it means to exist in this messy, beautiful, broken world.

If you would like to be a part of the project, pop me an email at em [at] emthemidwife [dot] com and we'll get the ball rolling.

Hi, I'm Em ☼

I'm a mum to two gorgeous, chaotic children & our little house is busy and colourful and never tidy. My husband is tall and kind and great at maths. He complains a little too much about the number of books and mugs I own, but apart from that he's a very good egg. For some reason I keep adding more heartbeats to our house, so we are always tripping over the cats, Echo & Jam Sandwich, or Cassie our golden retriever pup. I crave slow mornings, pottering about & reading in peace. It's a work in progress.
